Meet News19 Teacher of the Week Carolyn Lowman

Carolyn Lowman has been at Congaree Elementary School for more than two decades.

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — For the past 26 years, Mrs. Carolyn Lowman has walked the halls of Congaree Elementary School.

Before becoming the school's interventionist, she taught every grade inside the school. But no matter what grade she is teaching, she makes sure her students build confidence.

"I feel like it's important that I can get to know them, and first thing, build their confidence and get them comfortable in their own selves, in their own learning," Lowman said.

And that rings true for Eric Norris and Shalani Harrison.

"She's great, beautiful and nice," Norris said.

"She's a great teacher, and she does help us out in reading and sometimes math," Harrison said.

And it's not just her students that are inspired, but her son, too. Haines Lowman is a fourth grade student at Congaree Elementary.

"She's very sweet, she's kind. I love her. She's very loving, and she's the best mom in the world," Haines said. "She helps me with my homework after school."

"It's amazing. I love teaching here. I see families that I've known for my entire life. I have their kids, grandkids, great grandkids, nieces, and nephews. It just builds the community," Lowman said.

After graduating from Columbia College, Lowman took over a fourth grade class as a long-term substitute until she was hired full time the following year.

"I hope their goal is to be confident in themselves and make goals and just strive for them. Don't let anyone knock you down. You just keep moving," Lowman said.

"She's the best teacher in the world," Haines said.

Lowman has two other sons, Harrington and Hampton. Both also followed in their mother's footsteps and were graduates of Congaree Elementary.

If you know a teacher like Mrs. Lowman who deserves to be recognized for their hard work in the classroom you can nominate them by emailing us at TOW@WLTX.COM. Tell us what that educator is doing every day to go above and beyond in the classroom.
