The Palmetto State is no stranger to fluctuating weather, but when temperatures drop significantly, it’s time to get prepared. A cold snap has arrived over the area, bringing some of the chilliest weather of the season so far. The frigid air is being driven by a strong high-pressure system that is moving across the Midwest and extending eastward.

While snow is a rare sight in the Midlands, the potential for freezing temperatures and frosty mornings means residents should take steps to stay safe and comfortable.

Preparing for winter weather in Columbia starts at home. Make sure your heating system is in good working condition, and check that windows and doors are sealed to keep the cold air out. It's also wise to have an emergency kit on hand with essentials like flashlights, batteries, blankets, and non-perishable food, just in case power outages occur. Don’t forget about your pipes—letting a faucet drip and insulating exposed pipes can prevent costly freezes.

Outdoors, icy conditions can make roads hazardous, even without snow. If you must drive, take it slow and allow extra distance between vehicles. Stock your car with an ice scraper and emergency supplies, including water and a phone charger. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, bundle up in layers and limit time outside to avoid frostbite or hypothermia.

Finally, keep an eye on your neighbors, especially the elderly or those with limited mobility, as they may need extra help during extreme cold. Bring pets indoors or provide warm shelter for animals outside. This cold snap is a reminder that preparation is key to staying safe and comfortable when the chill sets in.
