Star QB Will Wilson from Richland Northeast wins Mr. Football, shining on and off the field

Will Wilson, an N.C. State signee, received the state's Mr. Football award. It comes after he has taken part in bowl practice with the Wolfpack.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — After a stellar career at Richland Northeast High School, Will Wilson has been named the state's Mr. Football. The announcement was made Saturday during halftime of the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl at Myrtle Beach.

An N.C. State signee who opted out of the Shrine Bowl to participate in bowl practice in Raleigh, Wilson played in 10 of the Cavaliers' 12 games this season after missing a pair of games due to knee arthroscopy. He threw for 2,482 yards with 22 touchdowns. Wilson also rushed for 1,144 yards and 20 scores as RNE finished 8-4 and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs for the second year in a row.

A former News19 Player of the Week, Will had a grade point average of 4.6. Playing for his father, head coach Walt Wilson, Will has been nothing short of an extraordinary teammate, and that, combined with his performances on and off the field, has led him to be named Mr. Football.

He was one of five finalists for the award and the only Midlands player up for the award. The other finalists were: 

Cutter Woods, QB, Westside; Marquise Henderson, RB, Belton-Honea Path; Malik Clark, WR, Rock Hill; and Shed Sarratt, OL, Gaffney.

The Mr. Football award has been presented by the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association.since 1995.
