ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A man is in the hospital after authorities say he shot himself in the abdomen as Orangeburg County deputies attempted to serve a warrant.
The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office said deputies attempted to serve two warrants for pointing and presenting around 1:40 p.m. on Thursday when the 34-year-old Neeses man ran into the woods from a Preserver Road home.
As the man ran, authorities said he fired a gun. About an hour later, deputies said the man started heading back toward the home. Deputies then heard a single gunshot and found the man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken from the scene for treatment, and his condition was not known at the time.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell shared that the person's actions were tragic and not the result that anyone in law enforcement ever hopes for.
“This is not the intentions [of] wishes or any officer attempting to serve a warrant,” he said.
Ravenell thanked the U.S. Marshals Service, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the North Police Department for their help.
