Cold weather shelters are opening across the Midlands for those in need of a warm place to stay.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Cold weather shelters are opening across the Midlands for those in need of a warm place to stay amid frigid temperatures and a possible wintry mix later this week. Here's when and where they're opening.

Kershaw County

2nd Chance Fellowship Church
1824 Jefferson Davis Highway, Camden

2nd Chance Fellowship Church, in conjunction with the United Way, has opened up a warming shelter at 1824 Jefferson Davis Highway in Camden. Anyone that needs to get out of the weather, experiences heat loss at their residence, or any other type of cold weather emergency can seek shelter here. 

Lexington County

RADIUS Church - White Knoll
5181 Platt Springs Road, Lexington
7 a.m. - 7 p.m., Monday, January 6 - Friday, January 10

RADIUS Church - White Knoll has opened a temporary warming center that will be open the rest of this week. 

They are also asking for donations of some items to be used at the warming center. They ask to please drop them off at RADIUS White Knoll in the bin outside the gym entrance. The primary items needed are: 

  • Snacks
  • Coffee
  • Coffee filters 
  • Clorox wipes
  • Lysol spray 
  • Laundry soap and laundry sanitizer
  • Bleach spray

Newberry County

O'Neal Street United Methodist Church
501 O'Neal Street, Newberry
Opened at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 7

The Warming Center at O'Neal Street UMC will open Tuesday starting at 10 a.m. Hot meals will be served and cots available for people who need a warm place to sleep. 

Orangeburg County

Orangeburg City Gym
410 Broughton St, Orangeburg, SC 29115
5 p.m. - 9 a.m., Tuesday, January 7 - Saturday morning, January 11

The City of Orangeburg is opening a Warming Shelter at the City Gym to provide a safe and warm place for those in need during the upcoming cold snap.

The shelter will be open from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. to provide a warm and secure place to stay during the coldest hours.

The shelter will provide basic amenities to ensure comfort and safety during this cold weather event.

Richland County

Columbia Overflow Shelter
COMET transport from Sumter & Laurel Street station
2 p.m. Friday, January 10, 2025

The City of Columbia will be open its overflow shelter at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025.

Access the shelter via The COMET beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the corner of Sumter St. and Laurel St.
