CLEMSON, S.C. — Dabo Swinney has found his defensive coordinator as all signs point to Tom Allen coming to the Upstate after one season as Penn State's defensive coordinator.
On Monday, the Clemson Board of Trustees Compensation Committee called a meeting for Tuesday to approve a “football coach’s compensation.”
A 33-year coaching veteran Allen was at Indiana for eight seasons. The first season he was the Hoosiers' associate head coach for defense before being promoted to head coach. He was 33-49 in his seven seasons in charge of that program.
But it wasn't all bad in Bloomington as the 2020 season saw Indiana post a 6-2 record during that COVID-affected season. Indiana was ranked as high as seventh before finishing that season ranked 12th by the Associated Press, the program's highest end-of-year ranking since 1967. For his efforts, Allen was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year and he was a finalist for other national coaching awards.
Allen would replace Wes Goodwin who was dismissed after three seasons as Clemson's defensive corodinator. It was expected Swinney would go after an experience play-caller and that is what Allen will bring to the Tiger program.
The Clemson Insider website reported that Allen and Swinney share the same agent which accelerated the hiring process.
